e-Commerce News along with data company, Dataprovider, have conducted research to find out how many online stores are currently in Europe. According to the research, there is a 98% accuracy in the measurements. In total, there are more than 800,000 online stores in Europe.
The most online stores are available in Germany (approx. 175,000), followed by the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France and Russia. The stores in Germany account for 20% of all the stores in Europe. Maybe surprising, the Netherlands is in third place, in this small country there are 82,000 online shops. As the Netherlands is fairly small, this makes it clear that large marketplaces like Amazon and eBay are not as common, while internet penetration is high and smaller online stores have been developing more over the years.
In total, the top 5 countries account for more than two-thirds of all online stores in Europe.
- The United Kingdom
- The Netherlands
